Hi friends,
read this: about baby einstein.
http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1650352,00.html
I thought this was important info for parents. We all mean so well! Goes to show that you don't have to spend $ to have well-developed children. Good reminder for all of us.

Also, this article alludes to the correlation between tv watching by babies and toddlers (and all kids) and having ADHD. From my perspective (clinical social worker by education) I think it is an obvious correlation there, with additional negative ramifications in the area of attachment, language development, etc.
being a parent is tough - an often we need to do other things than read to our kids . in lieu of TV watching - lets share some new ideas. I get in a rut sometimes and it's nice to have tips from others.
My sister gave me this one - tin foil sculpting. Crazy!?! but cheap and fun. tear off a sheet of tin foil about the size of a cake pan, for each child and sculpt whatever you can. in time, the creations get more advanced. it is pretty entertaining.

What else do you have for me?

I always wondered what all the hype was about letting kids watch toys being played with on TV, instead of giving the kid a toy to play with themselves!

Did your mom put Adam in front of the tv as an infant? That's all he ever does now...just kidding! Here's and idea, come to Vegas and I will take the kids to the park. We've got a really cool park that looks like and old western town. It's pretty neat. I should go and play by myself there because it looks that cool. I went running today and ate the access bar you gave me and I did 5 miles no problem! It was amazing!!! I need some of those! I am so excited for this marathon. I have a new motivation and new goals. Josh is engaged and I am going to challenge his fiance to run SG Marathon this year. I would love to run with her. She's fabulous. I have always been impressed with her. I am glad josh finally realized what we have realized the whole time.

thank you so much for sending this our way. I let Enzo watch Sesame Street. We don't have a TV but you can download free episodes on itunes and he loves the sesame movies from the library. I want him to do more productive things. I need to be better about this.

my husband recently told me about the baby einstein videos, too. as for ideas, outside play is the best when it's nice (or even when it's snowy, which it is all the time here!). also, we love to do crafts and goopy goop (cornstarch and water--see my blog). and free things in the area are always great, like play groups, our parks and rec does a play gym, the library, the museum.

I am horrible at letting my kids watch tv~ especially when it feels we are trapped in the house. But I do keep a box of activities, puzzles, games, little art projects, ect at the top of a closet and every once and a while I will pull down something. Since it isn't something they see and get to play with all the time they are usually pretty excited to have something "new" to do. But I am counting down the days until the weather warms up.

PS One more thing~ I have a subscription to Family Fun magazine (pretty cheap). I tear out the activities/ recipes/ ideas and keep them all in a 3 ring binder. It is also great because they have a lot of holiday and seasonal activies.

Just a suggestion, as I don't have any kids yet (just a bun in the oven) - fondant!! I make fondant from powdered sugar and marshmellows and kids LOVE to play with it. It's like playdough, only it's not so crumbly and it lasts forever. Plus, its totally edible and totally washable. It's been a life saver while babysitting kids!
